What to do in the first 10 Seconds of a Difficult Conversation

An Amazing tool to use for peace and getting your point across.

Most conversations do not blow up because of what is said in minute five. They blow up because of what is said in second five.

When someone comes at you angry, tense, or loaded, your instinct is to defend, explain, or correct. That instinct is usually what makes the whole thing worse.

In the first 10 seconds, do not fight to be understood. Show that you understand.

That is not weakness. That is strength under control.

A person who feels unheard gets louder. A person who feels understood gets calmer. And once the temperature drops, the truth has a chance to breathe.

You do not have to agree with someone to say, “I hear you.”
You do not have to surrender your position to show empathy.
You just have to be wise enough to know that empathy opens ears before logic ever can.

The first goal in a hard conversation is not winning. It is lowering the weapons.

If you can learn to do that, you will change your marriage, your leadership, your friendships, and your life.

If this is an area where you need help, reach out to me. I help men grow in clarity, emotional strength, and self control so they can handle hard conversations with wisdom instead of reaction.
